The unbeaten Itauma (14-0, 12 KOs) takes the biggest step of his professional career when he challenges for the vacant IBF heavyweight title on Saturday, August 29. Victory would see the 21-year-old become the second-youngest heavyweight world champion in boxing history, behind only Mike Tyson. Hrgović (20-1, 15 KOs), meanwhile, is looking to make history of his own by becoming Croatia’s first heavyweight world champion. Tensions continued to build at the final press conference, with Hrgović dismissing any suggestion of mind games and insisting his greater age and experience will make the difference. The Croatian delivered a warning to his unbeaten opponent, declaring that he will “smash the kid” and send Itauma “back to high school.” Itauma remained composed, insisting the world title and the attention surrounding the occasion have not changed his focus. The British heavyweight revealed that this was the fight he wanted and dismissed Hrgović’s comments as “schoolboy banter”, saying his sole objective is to beat the Croatian on fight night. Hrgović also opened up about what he described as his best training camp in six years, following preparations in Big Bear with Abel Sanchez, while Itauma discussed the pressure surrounding his rapid rise, comparisons with heavyweight greats and praise from former world champion Prince Naseem Hamed.
