On August fourteenth, seventeen ninety-one, two hundred enslaved Africans gathered at Bois Caïman for a Vodou ceremony led by Dutty Boukman and Cécile Fatiman. They sacrificed a black pig, mixed the blood with rum, and swore to fight for freedom. Days later, the Northern Plain burned. Thirteen years later, Haiti became the first nation founded by a successful slave revolt. The sacred mapou tree still stands at the ceremony site. This documentary examines eleven locations where Haitian history bled into the ground. At the Grand Cemetery of Port-au-Prince, squatters now live among exposed remains in collapsed tombs, where practitioners flood each November to honor Baron Samedi at the black cross. Saut-d'Eau waterfall draws tens of thousands of pilgrims seeking possession by Erzulie Dantor. At Plaine-du-Nord, bulls are sacrificed at the mud pool of Ogou Feray, the warrior spirit who fought alongside Haitians against the French. In nineteen sixty-two, Clairvius Narcisse was pronounced dead by two American doctors, buried, and walked back into his village eighteen years later claiming a bokor had paralyzed him with tetrodotoxin and enslaved him.
