Beneath the streets of Ballarat, Victoria, traces of Australia’s extraordinary gold rush may still survive. In 1851, the discovery of gold transformed Ballarat from a quiet settlement into one of the most important goldfields in the world. Thousands of miners arrived, ancient buried river deposits were explored, and deep shafts were sunk into the ground in search of gold. But the gold rush changed more than the land beneath the city. Waterways were diverted, mining waste reshaped the landscape, and parts of the nineteenth-century town may now lie buried beneath modern streets. Today, historical maps and archaeological research are helping reveal what remains of Ballarat’s earliest days—and how much of its gold-rush past may still be hidden beneath the city we see today. This is the story of the forgotten world beneath Ballarat, the miners who transformed it, and the history that the modern city was built over. The gold rush built Ballarat. It also buried parts of the town it created. #Ballarat #AustralianHistory #GoldRush #VictoriaAustralia #AustralianGeography
