Knowledge workers are watching their job descriptions erode in real time. Most respond by working harder at tasks machines already do cheaper. The real obstacle isn't the AI—it's the refusal to look directly at what changed. Marcus Aurelius wrote that the interference with action becomes the action. When the world removes a route, that removal contains information. It tells you the route was never the destination. The Stoics didn't claim adversity builds character; they claimed it reveals what was already there. Disruption is not weather. It is terrain. For forty years, knowledge work rewarded a specific stack: brief-to-memo-to-deck-to-meeting. Language models now perform most of that stack at passable level for nearly nothing. Not perfectly. Passably. And passably is the threshold that destroys middle-tier work. There are two failed responses: denial dressed as productivity (learning prompt tricks to preserve an old job), and panic (chasing every new model). Neither rebuilds. The Stoic position is colder and more useful. The terrain has changed and will not change back. The question is what the obstacle teaches about the ground you were standing on. Usually it was thinner than you thought. Subscribe to explore how discipline and first principles thinking become your competitive advantage when tools commoditize tasks.
