Her musical journey commenced under the guidance of her grandmother, also a musician trained by the esteemed violinist Kumbakonam Rajamanikkam Pillai. Recognizing Gayathri's innate talent, her grandmother nurtured her early interest in music. To further hone her skills, Gayathri underwent rigorous training under several eminent gurus. She studied with Ethapoor Srinivasan, from whom she gained the confidence for stage performances. Subsequently, she received tutelage from Sulochana Pattabhiraman, which instilled in her the discipline essential for rendering complex compositions. Her advanced training was under the mentorship of T.R. Subramaniam, a maestro known for his expertise in Ragam Thanam Pallavi, which enabled her to master intricate aspects of Carnatic music. Demonstrating her dedication to the art form, Dr. Gayathri pursued a Ph.D. in music from Delhi University. Over the years, she has graced numerous prestigious platforms, delivering over 600 concerts. Her performances are characterized by a blend of traditionalism and innovation, reflecting her deep understanding of the Carnatic tradition. Her extensive training, academic achievements, and commitment to cultural promotion have established Dr. Salem Gayathri Venkatesan as a respected figure in the realm of Carnatic music.
