She started her training in music from her mother Smt. Thulasi Subramaniam, herself a gifted and versatile artiste. A product of Kalakshetra groomed in Music and Bharatanatyam .She has also had the fortune to learn from several stalwarts like Mysore Vasudevacharya, Budalur Krishnamurthi, T.K. Ramaswamy Iyengar , M D Ramanathan during her stint at Kalakshetra. Her music is vintage that has stood the test of time. . Pursuing her interest in music at the University of Madras, she obtained her M.Litt. degree under the guidance of Dr. T Viswanathan. She gained good exposure to the Dhanammal style of music. She has since established herself as one of the leading exponents of the Dhanammal school, imbibing from them the subtleties, nuances and modes of expression characteristic of this school. Rama Ravi has also learnt Hindustani music under the guidance of Pt. Vinay Chandra Maudgalya of Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, New Delhi, and earned the Visharad degree with distinction.She is an A Top artiste of the All India Radio.
