October 20, 1960 — A Historic Didar That Brought Hope, Light, and Inspiration to Gilgit-Baltistan.
Ya Ali Madad!
October 20, 1960, holds a special place in the history of Gilgit-Baltistan. On this historic day, Mawlana Shah Karim al-Hussaini, His Highness the Aga Khan IV, the 49th Hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, began his memorable journey to the region, which continued until October 26. This historic occasion is remembered by the Ismaili Jamat as Haft-e-Noor — The Week of Light, a time of spiritual devotion, love, and renewed hope.
In this special story, we revisit the significance of this historic Didar and reflect on the enduring importance of education, healthcare, community development, and service to humanity. During that era, many communities in Gilgit-Baltistan faced challenges such as limited educational opportunities, inadequate healthcare facilities, poverty, and difficult geographical conditions. The vision of human development helped inspire hope for a brighter future and greater opportunities for generations to come.
We also explore the important role of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) and its associated institutions in advancing education, healthcare, rural development, and economic self-reliance across Gilgit-Baltistan and other parts of northern Pakistan.
Beyond its historical significance, Haft-e-Noor reminds us of the values of unity, knowledge, compassion, hard work, and collective responsibility. It encourages us to recognize that true progress is built not only through spiritual inspiration but also through practical efforts to improve people's lives and create opportunities for future generations.
Join us as we remember October 20, 1960 — a historic chapter of faith, hope, and human development that continues to inspire the Ismaili Jamat and the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.
May Gilgit-Baltistan continue to flourish in peace, education, unity, prosperity, and service to humanity.
Haft-e-Noor Mubarak!
