Trizol is a combination of guanidine thiocyanate and phenol, which effectively dissolves DNA, RNA, and proteins when tissues are homogenized or lysed. Following the addition of chloroform and subsequent centrifugation, the mixture separates into three distinct phases, with the upper clear aqueous layer containing the RNA.
