The Mulu Pinnacles are a series of 45m tall, jagged limestone spires located in Mulu National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Sarawak, Malaysia. The trek is a strenuous 3-day, 2-night adventure that involves a 9km hike to Camp 5, followed by a steep and challenging climb to the Pinnacles viewpoint using ladders and ropes. The journey is considered an extreme climb for experienced hikers with good fitness and a strong head for heights, and it requires a local guide for safety. The journey Day 1: A 9km trek through the rainforest to Camp 5. Day 2: An early morning start for the climb to the Pinnacles, which involves a 2.4km, steep, and root-covered trail with 17 ladders to navigate. After reaching the summit, you descend back to Camp 5 for another night. Day 3: A 9km hike back to the starting point at Kuala Litut, where a boat will take you back to the park headquarters. What to expect Difficulty: This is a challenging trek, not for those with a fear of heights or vertigo. Fitness and stamina are crucial. Terrain: Expect steep, rocky, and root-filled paths. The limestone rock can be very sharp. Assistance: The climb is assisted by man-made vertical steel ladders and ropes. Safety: A guide is mandatory for the climb and can stop you if they deem it unsafe due to your fitness or weather conditions. What to bring: Cotton gloves are recommended to protect your hands from the sharp rocks, and long, loose pants will protect your legs. You will also need your own food supply for the 3 days, though some items may be for sale at the park office. Accommodation: Accommodation at Camp 5 is basic. You will be provided with a sleeping mat, but you must bring your own bedding or rent it. Showers are available, but the water is cold. Why it's a unique experience The "alien landscape" of the jagged limestone spires is a spectacular and otherworldly sight. The remote wilderness setting provides an immersive jungle experience.
