Transnistria: The Country Still Flying the Soviet Flag

There is a country in Europe that still flies a flag with a hammer and sickle on it — not as nostalgia, as its actual national flag today. No country on Earth recognizes it. Not Russia, not the EU, not even most of its fellow unrecognized states. And yet roughly half a million people live inside it, going to work, raising kids, watching football, using a currency that can't be exchanged anywhere else on the planet. This is Transnistria — a narrow strip of land between Moldova and Ukraine that broke away before Moldova had even finished becoming a country, fought a short war in 1992, and has been frozen in place ever since.
