High above the bustling skylanes of Coruscant, afternoon sunlight filters through soaring, arched windows into the Jedi High Council chamber, casting long shadows across the polished floor. Five Jedi Masters sit in a semi-circle, brown wool robes draped over ornamental chairs. At the apex sits Master Yoda, his eyes half-closed in deep meditation as his hands rest upon his gimer stick. To his right, sitting rigid and towering, is Master Mace Windu. His dark skin catches the stark afternoon glare, highlighting the tight set of his jaw.
Before them stands Qui-Gon Jinn, his broad shoulders squared against the scrutiny of the room. Beside him, small and shivering in a tunic far too large for his frame, stands nine-year-old Anakin Skywalker. The boy’s eyes dart wildly across the vast chamber, anxious and mesmerized by the spires of the Republic capital, yet he stands rooted with an unnatural weight.
Windu’s eyes narrow as he watches the boy. Through the Force, the shatterpoints of the galaxy flicker around the child like sparkling glass, brilliant and blinding. Windu has spent a lifetime cultivating such a density of power through grueling martial discipline, yet this slave child possesses it natively, effortlessly, without an ounce of sacrifice.
Windu: The boy is too old. He has already formed attachments. Fear is thick in him.
Qui-Gon: He has known hardship, Master Windu, but his heart is clear. His potential is beyond anything we have ever encountered. His cells have the highest concentration of midi-chlorians I have ever seen in a—
Windu: High counts do not make a Jedi, Master Jinn. Control makes a Jedi. Discipline makes a Jedi.
Qui-Gon: You have felt it as deeply as I have, Master Windu. The Force swirls around him. He is the one spoken of in the ancient prophecy. The one who will bring balance.
The words hang in the quiet air of the chamber. The Chosen One.
Windu’s left hand flexes against his chair, a sharp pang of silent bitterness masked behind a wall of cold detachment. For decades, Windu has been the blade of the Republic, the master who walked the razor's edge of inner darkness without ever falling. He was meant to be the pillar upon which the Jedi stood. Yet here stands a scrub-faced boy from the outer rim dirt, touted by Qui-Gon as the ultimate fulfillment of Jedi history.
Windu: Prophecies are treacherous ground, Qui-Gon. We will test him, but the Council, and the Council alone, will decide his fate.
Qui-Gon: Test him then. He will not fail you.
Anakin looks up at Qui-Gon, trusting and desperate for approval. Qui-Gon places a reassuring hand on the young boy’s shoulder and gives him a quiet nod. When Anakin turns his gaze back to Windu, he senses the coldness radiating from the Master of the Order.
Anakin (9 yrs old; stoic): I'm not afraid.
Windu: You are terrified, young Skywalker. And that fear will be your undoing if you cannot master it.
Three years later, the rain falls in heavy sheets over the Temple gardens, drumming against the massive, vaulted glass domes of the training grounds while the smell of damp soil fills the atrium. Anakin, now twelve years old, stands in the center of a ring with a blue lightsaber humming in his hand. Opposing him are three remote droids, darting through the air at blinding speeds. Anakin moves with fluid elegance, deflecting energy bolts with aggressive, improvisational strikes rather than standard defensive forms.
Standing on the elevated gallery overlooking the gardens, Windu watches in silence, his dark robes folded around him. Anakin somersaults over a sweeping laser bolt, spins mid-air, and shears all three remotes in half with a single arc of plasma. He lands on his feet, chest heaving, a triumphant smile breaking across his features as he looks up toward the gallery. Obi-Wan nods in approval, but Windu remains unmoving.
Windu: His form is sloppy. He relies on raw reflex rather than deliberate technique. He is indulging in pride, Kenobi.
Obi-Wan: He is young, Master Windu. His connection to the Force is profound. I have never seen a padawan master the physical applications of Soresu and Shien at such an age.
Windu: Connection without restraint is dangerous. He moves like a tempest. A Jedi must be the calm at the center of the storm, not the storm itself.
Obi-Wan: Qui-Gon believed—
