Today’s journey begins in the quiet of Macclesfield Forest, where the day hasn’t quite decided what it’s going to be yet. From here we climb the sharp, distinctive summit of Shutlingsloe, sometimes called the Cheshire Matterhorn, before following towards High Moor. The route then drops into the enclosed valley of Wildboarclough, a place of steep sides and scattered farms. From the valley floor we turn east to reach Three Shires Head — the ancient meeting point of Cheshire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire. The packhorse bridge, waterfalls and narrow pools make this a central landmark on the route, and a perfect moment to explore stream‑crossing skills and safe decision‑making on the hill. The walk then climbs into the wild openness of Danebower Hollow, where the ruins of Danebower Quarry and the old embankment cuts a straight line into the moor. It’s a landscape full of history, echoes, and persistent tales of hammering and distant voices drifting across the quarry on still days. Finally, the loop returns to the softening edges of Macclesfield Forest, closing the day’s line of stations — Shutlingsloe, Wildboarclough, Three Shires Head, Danebower Quarry — each one a tick feature on the map and a moment in the landscape.
