Cold weather, a dead GoPro, missing pants, and NINE MILES OF ROAD WALKING! Welcome back to my journey to hike the entire Wisconsin Ice Age Trail in a year! This time, I'm taking on the Manitowoc Segment, but getting to the actual trail turns out to be an adventure of its own.
The day starts early with a plan to tackle the Manitowoc Segment while making progress on the connecting routes between previously completed segments. Unfortunately, things don't exactly go according to plan. My GoPro isn't charged, my pants are nowhere to be found, and the morning brings cold temperatures and foggy roads. What could possibly go wrong? 😂
🚶 THE ADVENTURE INCLUDES:
🌅 A beautiful sunrise along the water to kick off the day.
🚴 A chilly start and a long connecting-route adventure.
🚧 NINE MILES of road walking before finally reaching the Ice Age Trail!
📬 A fun shout-out to a local mailbox showing some love for Ice Age Trail hikers.
🌳 Scenic river views, boardwalks, bridges, and wooded trails.
🛶 Exploring the trails near Lower Henry Schuette Park and the Manitowoc River.
⚓ A walk through downtown Manitowoc, past the Maritime Museum and harbor.
🌊 Finishing with beautiful views along the Lake Michigan waterfront.
After miles of walking alongside traffic, getting onto the actual Ice Age Trail feels like a huge victory. The Manitowoc Segment offers some beautiful scenery, peaceful river views, boardwalks, and a fantastic finish near Lake Michigan. But those connecting routes? Let's just say they definitely test your patience and your legs!
🎯 THE BIGGER CHALLENGE: 1,200 MILES IN ONE YEAR?
When I started this adventure, my goal was to complete the entire Ice Age National Scenic Trail in Wisconsin in one year. Originally, I planned to bike many of the connecting routes instead of hiking every mile. But if I'm going to do this, why not try to become an official Ice Age Trail Thousand-Miler?
That goal comes with a reality check. Between the miles, the time commitment, and having a daughter in her senior year of high school, I need to remember that life doesn't stop just because there's more trail to hike. Maybe this adventure takes longer than a year. That's okay. The important thing is to keep moving forward and enjoy the journey along the way.
Would YOU walk nine miles of connecting road just to reach the trail? Let me know in the comments! 👇
