Self-Guided Walking Tour Berat, Albania: The City of One Above Another Window [4K] Welcome to Berat, one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in Albania. Many local guides say the nickname “City of a Thousand Windows” is not entirely accurate. The name is more poetic than literal, since nobody actually counted exactly 1000 windows. That’s why I prefer the title “ City of one above anoter window” as you can read in my title. Berat is famous for its unique Ottoman architecture, narrow stone streets, and rich history that can still be felt everywhere you walk. During this walking tour, we explore the historic neighborhoods of Mangalem and Gorica, separated by the Osum River and connected by the famous Gorica Bridge. As you walk through the peaceful streets, you’ll notice the traditional white houses built on the hillsides, creating the iconic view that made Berat a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the highlights of the city is the impressive Berat Castle, a fortress where people still live within the ancient walls today. The castle has existed for centuries and carries influences from the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods. From the top, you can enjoy stunning views over the city and surrounding mountains. Unfortunately, I was short on time an could not visit the castle. What makes Berat special to me is not only the history, but also the atmosphere. The city feels calm, authentic, and full of character. Local cafés, friendly people, and quiet streets make it easy to slow down and truly enjoy the moment.
