this is where you start.

Guerin County, Kentucky. Summer of 1927. A county road foreman named Coburn Ashe walks out of his own kitchen at half past four in the morning and does not come back. His lunch pail sits on the table, packed and untouched. His truck is in the shed with the key still on the seat.
Sheriff Sherwin Bragg has known Coburn since they were boys running the ridges. He also knows that three other men from the same hollow have gone missing in the last twenty years, and that every one of their case files ends with the same phrase — presumed drowned.
So the sheriff makes a phone call to Cincinnati. Two river-salvage divers come down on the eight-oh-five train. And for nine days that July, they go into the flooded shell of Rowe's Cut limestone quarry with hemp rope and brass helmets, and they bring things back up out of it that the sheriff never files, never speaks of again, and eventually seals in a red-string envelope in the courthouse basement marked TO BE OPENED IN 1950 OR AFTER.
This is the full account of what came up in those nine days, told the
whole way through, in the voice of someone who has held the last piece of paper in his own hands.
Fall asleep to it. Drive to it. Sit with it in the dark.
