(Part 2 Bloor to Union) Here's some history on the T1 prototype....The T1 first began as a H5 car, number 5796. Between July and December of 1990, 5796 was sent by the TTC to UTDC, now with Bombardier, to create a T1 prototype. The changes involved mainly features that the riders would encounter firsthand, including a revised seating and stanchion arrangement. These changes improved access into and out of the subway.5796 was shown to the public on February 12, 1991, but the majority disliked the lack of forward and backward-facing seats. Thus, 5796 was modified to include some forward-facing seats, and entered service again in April 8, 1991. Public involvement was an important part of the T1's development, including members of the mobility-impaired community, who helped to design the wheelchair locking position.
