The first 20 minutes of your morning can set up your whole day. And after 50, a couple of those minutes can also keep you off the floor. Rosa spent 22 years as an ER nurse, and many of the falls she saw started the same way: someone got out of bed too fast. Here's a simple 7-step morning routine, with every step backed by the CDC, the National Institute on Aging, or the American Heart Association.

✅ YOUR MORNING CHECKLIST (print it and tape it to your mirror)
☐ 1. Same wake-up time every day, even weekends (NIA)
☐ 2. Get up slowly: move your feet and hands first, then sit up, sit on the side of the bed, then stand with something sturdy to hold (CDC). Dizzy every time you stand? Tell your doctor.
☐ 3. A glass of water. Don't wait until you feel thirsty (NIA). If your doctor told you to limit fluids, follow their advice.
☐ 4. Blood pressure, if your doctor wants you to track it (AHA): bathroom first · no caffeine, exercise or smoking for 30 minutes · back supported, feet flat · arm at heart level, cuff on bare skin just above the elbow · sit quietly 5 minutes · write it down
☐ 5. Medicines at the same time every day, exactly as directed. Don't stop one on your own; call your doctor or pharmacist first.
☐ 6. Balance, with a sturdy chair or counter close by (NIA): stand on one foot while holding a chair, up to 10 seconds, then switch · heel-to-toe walk along the counter
☐ 7. Breakfast with protein + fiber: about 5 to 6½ ounces of protein foods a day for many older adults (1 egg = 1 ounce; 1 tablespoon peanut butter = 1 ounce); fiber from fruit, oatmeal, whole grains, beans (NIA)
Start with just ONE: step 2, getting up slowly.
