Besal Sapphire Mine Expedition | Gem Trails of Pakistan S1E2 In this second episode, we venture deep into the remote high mountains of northern Pakistan in search of the true source of the ruby, pink, purple, reddish, and even blue sapphires (corundum) mine. Home to one of the most under-documented and remote deposits in the world, located in the Himalayan mountain range. This episode was filmed over 2 seasons in 2 different expeditions. The expedition begins with uncertainty, fragmented local accounts, and no guarantee that a mine even exists, adding real suspense to the field investigation. With the first expedition team in Batakundi unable to reach a mine due to hazardous weather, the team faces an even more perilous situation here. However, will the team reach the mine this time? This is the first documentary expedition from Besal, especially of this kind documenting the expedition and sapphire mine ever, no one has made such an expedition fully documented in this nature, and after watching this episode, you will realise why. This episode and the previous directly solves one of the most biggest cases of origin misidentification in the gem world, the mines at Batakundi are not home to the purple pink blue sapphires, and all data pointed towards another remote locality, Besal, but is this the true location? Besal is also spelt as Besar, Besil, Basil and other ways. Another issue is that the gem world has been labelling this material as from Kashmir (Azad Kashmir, Pakistan), but as you will see, our investigation shows otherwise. Besal is most likely home to the best sapphire mines in Pakistan, and our work is one way that these mines and miners can get recognition around the world. The 16ct stone that has a report indicating from Kashmir shows inclusions and color consistent with Besal material but as the stone has not been observed being mined or in rough we cannot be 100% certain, but we are certain that this is not from Kashmir. Another possibility is this specific stone is from Afghanistan although all indications do suggest Besal. All other stones are from Besal. Led by a gemologist (GIA Alumni) and a geologist duo, the team documents the ascent, terrain, and on-the-ground realities of sapphire mining in one of the highest corundum mines on earth.
