Patih Taskara Maguna, the transformation of Rangda, the arrival of Barong, and the dramatic climax of ngurek. Filmed on 17 October 2026 at Pura Dalem Ped, Nusa Penida, Bali, this is the powerful final scene of Calonarang performed by Paguyuban Kandapat. The finale brings together several pivotal moments from the Calonarang story, beginning with Patih Taskara Maguna, whose confrontation with Walu Nateng Dirah leads toward one of the most dramatic transformations in Balinese ritual theatre. In the traditional narrative, Walu Nateng Dirah, the powerful widow associated with Calon Arang, becomes enraged when challenged. She transforms into Rangda, revealing a terrifying manifestation of her supernatural power. This transformation marks a turning point: the confrontation is no longer simply between human characters, but enters the sacred and dangerous world of Calonarang. In Kandapat’s performance, the scene develops through the encounter between Patih Taskara Maguna and Rangda, including the dramatic use of the kris. Rangda then delivers her speech, addressing and challenging those who stand against her. Her presence dominates the performance space, building tension before the arrival of Barong. Barong enters as the drama approaches its climax. In Balinese religious and ritual traditions, Barong is associated with Banaspati Raja and the divine power of Shiva, while Rangda is closely connected with Dewi Durga and the sacred world of the cemetery. Their encounter should not be reduced to a simple battle between good and evil: their relationship can also express the dynamic balance of opposing and complementary forces. The final stage erupts into ngurek, the intense ritual scene in which participants experiencing kerauhan — trance or spiritual possession — wield their kris and direct them toward Rangda and themselves. The atmosphere changes dramatically. Kandapat’s performers rush and leap through the space, approaching Rangda with their kris in a succession of powerful movements. The action becomes increasingly unpredictable, and the boundary between dramatic representation and ritual experience seems to grow thinner. At moments, the performer behind the mask becomes exposed amid the intensity of the encounter. In Balinese ritual understanding, ngurek (self-stabbing) is not merely a spectacular display of fearlessness. It is connected with spiritual protection, the handling and transformation of dangerous forces, and the ritual process of somia — pacifying or transforming disruptive energies. The participants’ trance states, the sacred masks, the kris and the ritual space all contribute to the intensity of this moment. What makes Paguyuban Kandapat’s final scene distinctive is the way these elements are brought together: Patih Taskara Maguna’s confrontation, Rangda’s transformation and speech, the arrival of Barong, and the final eruption of ngurek. Rather than separating the concluding events into several independent episodes, this interpretation builds them into one sustained and dramatic climax. The result is an unforgettable ending to Kandapat’s Calonarang at Pura Dalem Ped — a performance in which sacred figures, theatrical action and the experience of trance converge in one of Bali’s most powerful ritual traditions.
