Bilum Weave - Basic Technique

Bilum weaving is a traditional handicraft used by women in Papua New Guinea to create durable string bags that are quite popular and used in everyday life in Papua New Guinea. This weaving technique uses a large eyed needle and twined rope of different contrasting colours to create intricate designs and patterns representing the different cultural groups in the country. The weaving technique may look difficult but is really just repetitive knotless weaving of the string to form this stretchy woven bag as the finished useful product.
