Flying Into a Controlled Airport || Real UK PPL Radio Calls

Radio calls can be one of the most challenging parts of flight training—especially when you move from a familiar airfield to a controlled airport with full ATC. In this video, I've cut together real footage from my flights between North Weald Airfield and London Southend Airport to show the radio calls you can expect during a flight into and out of controlled airspace. North Weald uses an Air/Ground Communication Service, while Southend provides full Air Traffic Control. That gives us the opportunity to follow the RT from leaving North Weald through to arriving at Southend, landing, taxiing, departing again and eventually returning to North Weald. You'll hear examples including: ✈️ Leaving an Air/Ground frequency 🎧 Listening to the ATIS 📻 Making the initial call to ATC 🛬 Requesting joining instructions 👀 Receiving traffic information 🗼 Changing from Approach to Tower ✅ Receiving and reading back a landing clearance 🚕 Taxi instructions 📋 Departure clearance and readback 🎙️ Changing between ATC frequencies 🏠 Requesting a frequency change for the return to North Weald I'll also look at the longer departure clearance that can catch student pilots out if they are not prepared for it. Flight training is expensive enough already. The last thing you want is to spend valuable airborne time trying to work out what to say on the radio—or repeat a lesson because you weren't prepared for the RT. The aim of this video is to help UK student pilots become more familiar with the flow of real radio communication before experiencing it themselves. This is real flight footage rather than a substitute for formal RT instruction. Always use the current UK CAA CAP 413 Radiotelephony Manual and follow the guidance of your flight instructor.
