An Egyptian servant who was used, mistreated and then ran away into the desert. The Lord found her by a spring and spoke to her, and she gave Him a name: "the God who sees me." Later, cast out with her son and out of water, God heard the boy crying and opened her eyes to a well. Where Jesus is in this story: The God who sees the outcast came in person. Jesus kept stopping for the overlooked: the foreigner, the woman at the well, the one nobody noticed. ▶ Hear the whole journey, in order, from the people who lived it: Scripture: Genesis 16; 21:8–21 Song 8 of 54 in The Unwritten Psalms, the story of the Bible sung by the people who lived it. Listen to their stories. Find yourself in them. Find Jesus in every one. LYRICS I was a girl from somewhere else, sold to a family far from home. I carried water, I carried bread, I carried things that weren't my own. Then my lady couldn't have a child, so she gave me to her man like a borrowed dress. And when my belly grew, she turned on me like it was my fault. I never said yes. So I ran, with his baby inside me, out into the sand with nowhere to go. I'd rather die out there on my own than be nobody in their home. Then Somebody found me by a spring, out where nobody ever goes. He called me by my name. He said, "I heard you." Nobody ever heard me. Now He knows. Nobody ever saw me, I was just the girl who served, the one they used and threw away, the one who never got a word. But You found me in the desert by a spring nobody knew, and You said my name like it mattered. You see me. And I see You. Years later they sent us out for good, my teenage boy, some bread, one skin to drink. When the water ran out, I laid him under a bush and walked away so I wouldn't watch him sink. I sat down far enough to not hear him cry, and I cried like I was dying too. Then a voice said, "Don't be afraid. He heard your boy," and He opened my eyes to a well I never knew. Nobody ever saw me, I was just the girl who served, the one they used and threw away, the one who never got a word. But You found me in the desert by a spring nobody knew, and You said my name like it mattered. You see me. And I see You. If you've ever been the one they used, the one they paid, the one they threw away, if you're raising a baby on your own out in the desert, with nothing left to say, there's a God who sees you. Years later a Man sat by a well at noon, when only the ashamed would come, and He told a woman everything she'd done, and she ran to town: "Come see this One!" The God who found me in the desert came walking in the sand to sit down with the ones nobody sees and hold them in His hands. If nobody ever sees you, if you're just the one who serves, the one they use and throw away, the one who never gets a word, He'll find you in the desert by a spring nobody knew, and He'll say your name like it matters. He sees you. He sees you. I was the first to give Him a name: You're the God who sees me. #TheUnwrittenPsalms #BibleSongs #Hagar
