The terminal is the second airport in Chengdu, the provincial capital of Sichuan province. Chengdu is now only the third Chinese city after Beijing and Shanghai to open a second airport. The southwestern province is a major tourist destination, drawing travellers to its spectacular landscapes, spicy cuisine and its giant pandas, and planners hope Chengdu will emerge as a key hub for flights to Tibet, South Asia and Europe.
