Day 5 in Chongqing. We start the morning at Hong'en Temple Forest Park, climb the seven-storey Hong'en Pagoda for the view out over the city, then spend the afternoon in Ciqikou — a thousand-year-old stone-slab street that is now one of the busiest street food markets in China. We eat our way through it: the pressed sweet that is registered as intangible cultural heritage, ciba pounded by hand in a stone mortar, fresh orange juice, street noodles standing up in the middle of the crowd, grilled oysters. Then my mum decides she wants her hair done — in a Chinese salon, with no shared language — and we finish the day over hotpot. If you are planning Chongqing: this is Hong'en Temple Forest Park and Ciqikou on a normal weekday in autumn, what it costs, what is worth queueing for and what is not. 00:00 Hong'en Temple Forest Park 02:40 The Hong'en Pagoda 05:00 Inside the tower, and the view from the top 07:10 Ciqikou Ancient Town 07:50 First street food 09:00 The big Chongqing sign 12:20 Ciba, pounded by hand 14:00 Street noodles 18:00 Lunch by the river 19:20 Grilled oysters 20:50 Mum gets her hair done in China 22:40 Hotpot to finish More from this China trip on the channel.
