Have we ever stopped to truly understand what drives us to vote in the first place? The motives may seem obvious, but it isn't simply so we can elect the best candidates. The act of voting seems often irrational to irregular voters and nonvoters, while more frequent voters treat it as a self-evident civic duty. Yet while focusing on simple mathematical impact is the wrong approach, we should have a convincing reason for why we vote so that we never lose sight of the importance of the most basic democratic right and responsibility. Today's episode of Politics with Paul explores the most frequent motives for voting, why our "why" for voting matters, and how it can persuade others as to why they should also vote. 0:00 Understanding Why We Vote in the First Place 1:57 Is Voting a "Rational" Act? 6:21 5 Common Motives for Voting 9:01 Evaluating the Motives for Voting 11:32 The Thin Line Between Altruism And Self-Interestedness 14:47 The Thin Line Between Duty, Belonging, and Social Approval 18:20 Why Does it Matter Why We Vote?
