Hermann Göring was one of the most powerful and controversial figures of Nazi Germany — a decorated First World War ace who transformed himself into one of Hitler’s closest allies and the architect of the Nazi police state. Born in 1893 into a family tied to German colonial administration, Göring grew up surrounded by military values. His early fame as a fighter pilot helped him rise quickly once he joined the Nazi Party in 1922, becoming commander of the SA and a central figure in Hitler’s violent rise to power. After the Nazis took control of Germany in 1933, Göring used his positions to reshape the state. As Prussian Minister of the Interior, he established the Gestapo, crushed political opposition, and helped eliminate parliamentary democracy. He oversaw the expansion of the Luftwaffe, orchestrated economic policies that fueled rearmament, and played a crucial role in antisemitic persecution and the plunder of occupied Europe. In 1941, Göring personally authorized preparations for the “Final Solution,” linking him directly to the machinery of genocide. Göring lived a life of extravagant luxury at Carinhall while millions suffered under Nazi rule. Yet his military failures — especially during the Battle of Britain and the Eastern Front — gradually eroded his standing. By 1945, desperate to salvage power, he attempted to assume leadership from Hitler, only to be denounced as a traitor. Captured by U.S. forces, Göring became the highest-ranking Nazi defendant at the Nuremberg Trials. Convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity, he was sentenced to death.
