In December 1923, the widow of Montgomery Ward wrote a three-sentence letter to Northwestern University. It set three conditions on a memorial for her husband: it must be visible, it must be enduring, it must be useful. Not one sentence mentioned women.
At that moment, Northwestern's medical school had not enrolled a woman in 57 years.
Elizabeth Ward gave more than $8 million — the largest gift the university had ever received from one person. She broke ground at 73, died in July 1926, and never saw the building finished. That autumn, four women walked into a first-year medical class inside it.
This is the story of what that money actually bought, and of the number the school quietly attached to the word "equality."
