American farmers could spend $12 billion this year fighting weeds with chemical herbicides that can damage soil, threaten the environment, and put the people growing our food at risk. A Seattle startup thinks lasers are the fix.
Why do some startups take off and others don't? Get the answer: https://clickhubspot.com/jm4e
Herbicides took off in the 1940s, but weeds evolved to resist them, and in some cases that meant spraying more, with some farmers now applying glyphosate three to six times a season. Carbon Robotics’ LaserWeeder is built to break that cycle: cameras and an AI trained on more than 150 million plant images tell crop from weed, then a laser burns out the weed’s growth center in about 100 milliseconds, up to 10,000 times a minute. But one wrong shot could kill the crop next to it. And at around $800,000 a machine, it has to beat hand crews and herbicides on cost, not just on novelty.
Noelle went to Salinas, California, to see how it holds up in the field, what farmers running it 22 hours a day are actually saving, and why a company with over $100 million in annual revenue still isn’t profitable.
