Thirumazhapadi Vaidynathaswamy Temple Location - https://goo.gl/maps/shybBbeUxmfgJc8N6 Thirumazhapadi Vaidyanathaswamy temple : This place is in between Ariyalur and Thiruvaiyaru. It is around 33 Kms from Ariyalur and 16 Kms from Tiruvaiyaru. The temple is more than 1500 years old and was visited by Appar, Sundarar and Sambandar. Most of us have heard about Vaidheeswararn Koil where people pray to get relief from diseases. Since the Lord here is Vaidyanathaswamy, similar prayers are offered here. This is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalamas and it is on the banks of Kollidam river. The 7 tiered gopuram welcomes the devotees. This temple was originally constructed by the Pallavas around the 6th century and the subsequent renovations and additions were done by the Chozhas. 140 inscriptions found inside the temple indicate the history of this temple, right from the Pallava to the Chozhas to the Vijayanagara to the Maratha kings. Inside the temple, there is a 100 pillar mandapam full of sculptures, giving the Chozha temple architecture. The Lord is a Swayambumurthy. It is believed that he came out of the earth to give darshan to Purushamrugam, a Shiva Bhaktha ( Is it an allusion to Shri Nandeeswarar, though the Sthalapuranam says that this Murthy was brought from Sathyalogam by the Purushamruga Rishi ?). An unusual feature is that there are two Nandis one behind another, in front of the main shrine. This is one of the few temples where Palm tree is the Sthala Vruksha. The Lord here is known by different names- Vaidyanathar, Vajrathambeswarar, Vairathoonnadar, Mazhuvadeeswarar etc. He faces East. Ambal is called Sundarambigai or Azhagambigai and She also faces east. She is having a separate temple unlike a shrine we normally find in many temples. In addition, there is one more Ambal shrine for Balambikai. On the prakaram, there are large number of sub-shrines for Vinayakar, Murugan, Viswanathar, Visalakshi, Ayyarappar, Sokkanathar, Meenakshi etc. Special mention must be made about Jurahareswarar shrine. On behalf of people suffering from high fever, freshly cooked rice along with rasam is offered as Neivedhyam in this shrine! This is also an Uttaravahini Kshetram as Kollidam flows from South to North here. In between the Shiva and Nandi shrines, there are three pits which are considered as Navagrahams and people light til oil lamps there. Hence there is no separate Navagraha shrine here. In the Ardhamandapam, there is a granite statue of the Lord holding the axe in one hand and a spear and rope in another hand to prevent Yama from taking away Markandeya. Please recall the Thirukadayur Markandeya story. Another explanation for the name of this place is that the area was ruled by kings known as Mazhavarayans. As per the Sthala Puranam, Sage Siladha was living in Thiruvaiyaru. He was childless. He did intense penance. Shiva appeared before him and granted him the wish, subject to certain conditions. The sage had to perform Putrakameshti Yagna. For performing this, he had to level the land where he would be given a box containing the child, which would live only for 16 years. The sage completed the task and when he was levelling the land, the plough stuck a box. When the sage opened the box, he found a small child with three eyes, 4 shoulders and a crescent moon on his forehead. He named the child as Japesan. Special mention must be made about Shri Nandeeswarar. His marriage is believed to have taken place here. As per sthala puranam, the Nandi of the Aiyarappar temple of Tiruvyaru married Goddess Swayambikai of Thirumazhapadi. Hence when the groom Nandi arrives here with a Marathi style headgear, the Lord Vaidyanathaswamy Himself used to receive Him on the banks of Kollidam river. This is being enacted every year during the Nandi Kalyana utsavam in the Tamil month of Panguni. After the marriage, the Lord takes the Nandi couple to the nearby 7 Shiva Temples which are situated very close to this temple. Since Nandi Himself got married here, eligible boys and girls throng this temple on the day of Nandi Kalyanam to get His blessings for their own marriages! There are two theerthams for the temple- Lakshmi Theertham in front of the Amman temple and the Sivaganga.
