In 1998, a film crew was cage-diving the clearest water in the Pacific off Guadalupe Island when every great white vanished at once. Seconds later, in full sun and a hundred feet of visibility, something shaped exactly like a great white rose up the drop — longer than the forty-foot boat, and then some. It passed under the hull slow and unhurried, turned one dinner-plate eye up at them, and went back down the drop into the blue-black. There were two cameras running — and the footage is gone, lost the way things go when the people holding them can’t believe what they filmed. If the one place clear enough to show us the thing plainly finally did, and we lost the film to our own disbelief, how many times has the deep shown itself to people who simply couldn’t believe it?
