Twenty-three rooms. That is the house Dolly Parton lived in for fifty-four years, ten miles south of Nashville, on a road most people could drive past without noticing. She never gave a television tour of it. She never opened the grounds. In half a century, no magazine got inside with a camera crew. The photographs that exist of that property were taken from the air. And the reason the house is that size, on that much land, set that far back from the road, is a decision she made in 1972 — before anybody knew who she was. She told her husband they had better buy a big enough lot, so they could have privacy when the tour buses came by trying to look in.
