Known as an agricultural hub (especially durian and local fruits), it serves as the main economic centre for the district. Bordering the states of Negeri Sembilan and Pahang as a district, the town itself is divided into several main areas including the Old Town (Upper Town) and new areas such as Bandar Putra and Bandar IOI. Its name is believed to have originated from the phrase "Segar Amat" (meaning "very refreshing"), attributed to a 16th-century Melaka nobleman, Bendahara Tepok, who found the local river water particularly revitalising.
