Where does the Sun go at night? 🌙 Why is there day and night? A space science lesson for kids aged 8 to 11. Lots of people think it travels around the Earth every day, or hides behind the hills. In this longer lesson, we test two ideas, the Sun going around us and the Earth spinning, find out what astronauts and satellites see from space, spend a whole day at your house from midnight to sunrise, noon, sunset and midnight again, watch the Sun cross the sky from your house, and find out how fast the spinning Earth carries you along. Pause and guess at each question, then try the quiz at the end! ▶ Try it yourself, free: https://nowiseewhy.com/day-night?from... An interactive 3D lesson for ages 5–11, with a Grown-ups level too. No accounts, and no ads in the lessons. Chapters 0:00 Where does the Sun go at night? 0:31 Idea 1: does the Sun go around us? 0:45 Idea 2: does the Earth spin? 1:04 Which one really happens? 1:31 A whole day at your house 2:37 Why does the Sun seem to move? 3:08 How fast is your house moving? 4:31 Quiz time! 5:17 Lesson complete Remember: the Earth spins once a day. Sunrise is your side of the Earth turning into the sunlight; sunset is your side turning away. The Sun is about 150 million kilometres away, and about a million Earths would fit inside it. It only looks like it moves from east to west, because the Earth spins toward the east. A house 40 degrees north of the equator is carried along at about 1,280 kilometres an hour, faster than a jet plane, and we don’t feel it because we, the ground and the air all move together.
