During the 1950s, a young mother named Mary noticed an elderly neighbor who rarely left his room. Without being asked Mary began leaving food at his door, then later asked if he needed anything. He said he was fine, but his voice sounded lonely and weak. So she asked Mr Thompson if he would mind accompanying her to the store. And she had a wagon so carrying his bags was never an issue. One winter, her family’s heat went out, and she borrowed a small kerosene heater from a friend. When she returned it, her friend mentioned Mr. Thompson had been declining for months. Mary realized she had been helping in small ways while missing a deeper need: companionship and care over time. So she set aside time each week to listen, pray, and sit with him. Other neighbors joined in with groceries, rides, and calls. Soon his room filled with ordinary kindness—clean bedding, cards, and laughter. He couldn’t repay them, but his gratitude changed. And not only Mr Thompson's attitude but the whole block’s spirit.
