Stories claim Fionn mac Cumhaill roamed these woods and rested by the river. Looking at the huge stone boulders, you can see why people believed it! The tree spirits (watch out for the fairies): Local folklore says the deepest parts of Tollymore are protected by the daoine sídhe (fairy folk). Superstitions warn never to damage thorn trees or disrespect stone paths, or the fairies will play tricks on you. I stayed on the track just in case!
