A $13,000 battery stores 13.5 kWh. A 1,000-gallon tank of warm water stores about 7 times that, as heat. And on a lot of old farms, the hole for it was dug a century ago.
In old farmhouses, the bill that hurts usually isn't electricity. It's the oil delivery and the propane truck. Heating and cooling take more than half of a typical home's energy, and a wall battery doesn't store a single BTU of heat.
In this video I walk through the honest math on using water as a heat battery, and how a forgotten cistern out back might give you a head start. That includes the parts most videos skip: one full tank equals only about 2.5 gallons of heating oil, it holds heat for days and not seasons, and it only saves money if you have a cheap or free way to keep refilling it.
⚠️ SAFETY FIRST: Never enter an old cistern, septic tank, or any buried tank, not even for a minute and not with a rope. These are confined spaces where the air can kill you without warning. If someone collapses inside, call 911 and don't go in after them. Secure every old tank lid today so kids and pets can't move it.

💬 Does your place have an old cistern or buried tank? Brick, stone, poured concrete, or a mystery? And would you bury a tank of heat or hang a battery on the wall? Tell me in the comments. I read them.
