For generations of British children, the end of the school day meant one thing: racing home before your favourite programme began.
From Play School, Blue Peter, Magpie, Jackanory and Crackerjack to Grange Hill, The Wombles and countless cartoons and adventures, weekday afternoons followed a familiar rhythm that became part of childhood itself.
This documentary looks back at how the BBC and ITV carefully shaped after-school television throughout the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s, creating a shared experience that millions of children remember with enormous affection. It explores the programmes that educated, entertained and inspired us, the rivalry between the broadcasters, and why those few precious hours after school became such an important part of growing up.
Before Children's BBC and Children's ITV, there was simply children's television... and for a couple of magical hours every weekday, it belonged to us.
If you remember rushing home before the opening titles, I'd love to hear your memories in the comments.
