Album: Grobschnitt (Brain), Germany 1972. ⚡ 13-minute epic engineered by Conny Plank & Eroc, featuring dual drums and a string quartet from the Hamburg State Opera. In 1971, Grobschnitt were a young band from Hagen without a record deal. Lupo and Baer drove a blue NSU Prinz to Hamburg, found record companies in a telephone directory and began calling them from a phone booth. One of those calls led to Metronome and eventually to their first album. By then, “Symphony” was not a new studio composition. According to the archival liner notes, the piece had already existed for about two years, while a much longer live “Die Sinfonie” is documented in 1971. On stage it could stretch to around half an hour. For the album, it was reshaped into a 13.45 piece divided into Introduction, Modulation, Variation and Finale. The road to the studio had already begun back in Hagen. During 1971, Eroc recorded the band live in their rehearsal hall and worked on the tapes at home with tape machines, generators, echo devices and his self-built mixing desk. When Grobschnitt entered Hamburg's Windrose Dumont Time Studios in December, Eroc found himself engineering alongside Conny Plank, with Frank Mille producing. Eroc and Felix played as the band's two drummers, while a string quartet from the Hamburg State Opera added an unexpected classical dimension. Those strings also left a wonderfully human studio story. According to the archival liner notes, one violinist repeatedly played F instead of F sharp. Wildschwein became angry and the musician was close to leaving until Plank persuaded him to stay. Later they discovered that the violinist had been right. The wrong note was written on the score. Behind all that scale, the lyric is surprisingly simple. Someone is trying to reach a woman who keeps passing by, wondering how they might finally be together. Released on Brain in April 1972, “Symphony” opened the debut album. It captured a band carrying its homemade experiments into a professional studio without leaving their strange identity behind. ________________________________________ 👉 Subscribe and join Vintage Tunes for more rare and forgotten rock discoveries.    / @vassilisa109   🔎 Continue exploring:    • ⛓️ VT - Krautrock Archives | German Underg... Τον Δεκέμβριο του 1971, στα Windrose Dumont Time Studios του Hamburg, οι Eroc και Felix ηχογράφησαν ως οι δύο drummers του συγκροτήματος. __________________________________ LINE-UP Wildschwein — vocals, rhythm guitar Lupo — lead guitar Baer — bass, flute, percussion Quecksilber — organ, piano, spinet, percussion Eroc — drums, percussion, electronic effects Felix — drums, percussion Hamburg State Opera String Quartet — “Symphony” __________________________________ #Grobschnitt #Symphony #Krautrock #GermanProg #ConnyPlank #BrainRecords #VintageTunes ARCHIVAL & COPYRIGHT NOTICE Vintage Tunes produces curated historical music features for educational, historical and archival purposes, combining original editorial research with digitally restored visual archives and historical documentation.
