Why did Jesus cleanse the temple? In today’s September 5 devotional reading from Christ Triumphant, “My House Shall Be Called a House of Prayer,” we see Jesus confront what had happened to a place meant for worship. 📖 Scripture Reading: Matthew 21:12 (KJV) 📅 Devotional Date: September 5 📚 Devotional: Christ Triumphant by Ellen G. White “And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves.” — Matthew 21:12 (KJV) The temple courts were filled with noise, buying, selling, animals, and moneychangers. A place intended to draw people closer to God had become filled with distraction and selfish gain. Jesus declared: “My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.” Yet what happened afterward is just as important. When the priests and rulers returned, they found that Jesus had been healing the sick and restoring those who were suffering. The same Christ who drove corruption from the temple was also the compassionate Saviour who brought healing, freedom, and hope. Still, the religious leaders refused to believe. They did not lack evidence. They simply did not want the evidence Jesus was giving them. Today’s devotional invites us to examine more than a building. It invites us to examine our own hearts. Have distractions, selfish desires, pride, or unbelief taken up space that belongs to God? Are we willing to let Jesus remove whatever interferes with true worship? 🙏 May our hearts become places where Christ is welcomed, His Word is obeyed, and prayer has its rightful place.
