What would happen if the most powerful bomb ever built, the 50-megaton Tsar Bomba, exploded at the bottom of the deepest place on Earth? In this 3D animation we follow it down almost 11 km into the Mariana Trench, where Mount Everest would still sit about 2 km under water, and the pressure is more than 1,000 times what you feel at the surface.
You'll see the fireball turn into a giant bubble of steam and gas, the shockwave racing through the water, why the crushing pressure makes the bubble collapse and bounce several times, what (if anything) you'd see on the surface 11 km above, and the big questions: would it cause a tsunami, could it boil the ocean, what about radiation, and could it set off an earthquake?
