To form a Japanese coiffure, the coiffurist first parts the hair into five blocks: front, sides, root, and back. The root is the foundation for forming the chignon. Later, the four tresses of the back, sides, and front are brought together to the root to form a great tress at the top of the head. ブロッキングから、根を元結で纏めるまで。ブロッキングとは、頭髪に分け目を入れて、前髪、根、左右の鬢、髱の5つの部分に分ける作業を指します。根は、髷を作るための土台のようなもので、これを中心にして髱、鬢、前髪それぞれの先端を持って来て髻を作ります。
