The Knight in the Wall | Exploring St Mary's Church, Lenham Kent

Welcome to St Mary’s Church in Lenham, Kent — a beautiful medieval church packed with fascinating history and remarkable hidden details. Join me as I explore this historic village church, discovering a medieval wall painting, ancient choir stalls, beautiful stained glass, a centuries-old carved pulpit, an old lectern, the unusual Archbishop’s Chair, medieval masons’ marks and the historic St Edmund’s Chapel. One of the most intriguing discoveries is the remarkable stone effigy set into the wall of the chancel. The information displayed inside the church identifies the figure as Sir Thomas Appudafeld, a Knight Hospitaller associated with the Crusades and said to have been knighted by Richard the Lionheart after the Battle of Acre in 1191. However, there is some conflicting historical evidence. Historic England and other historical sources describe the effigy as that of a robed medieval priest, traditionally thought to represent a rector who died in 1327. So rather than presenting one interpretation as definite, I’ll leave you to decide what you make of this fascinating monument.
