Here's how we protect a bamboo frame, and which coatings actually hold up against the weather. Every bike needs some protection. Steel rusts, aluminium oxidises, and bamboo is no different: left bare it'll suffer from UV, salt water and mud over time. We talk through the options we like, including yacht varnish, tung oil and car finish, why a clear coat matters, and why it's worth coating the lugs and glued joints too, since the adhesives can break down in sunlight if you leave them exposed.
