The Giant Bridge Built Before the Roads Ever Reached It

Deep in California’s San Gabriel Mountains stands a concrete highway bridge that cars never reached. Completed in 1936, the Bridge to Nowhere was supposed to become part of a mountain highway connecting the San Gabriel Valley toward Wrightwood. But before the route could be completed, the catastrophic 1938 flood destroyed major sections of the roadway and changed the project forever. The bridge survived. The highway did not. Today, reaching the structure requires traveling deep into the wilderness, where fragments of pavement, abandoned road cuts and the bridge itself still reveal what planners once intended to build. In this documentary, we trace the real history of the East Fork Highway, the engineering challenge of forcing a road through the San Gabriel Mountains, the flood that shattered the plan, and the later attempt to build another route through the same landscape.
