Big Ted, a signed goodbye from Olly Ohlson, and something unpleasant beneath Auckland’s volcanoes — very different ways to remember childhood in front of the television. This trip through New Zealand children’s TV revisits Play School, After School, What Now, Spot On and Woolly Valley, then follows Terry and the Gunrunners, Children of Fire Mountain and Under the Mountain into stranger adventures. There’s also Jason Gunn with Thingee on The Son of a Gunn Show, and the gentler pace of Suzy Cato’s You and Me. Along the way are egg-carton collections, homemade films, a skateboard down the wrong driveway, and the detail people often get wrong about Thingee’s famous eye incident.
These programmes made room for ordinary things: a story, a simple craft, a guest turning up, or a familiar place becoming the setting for an adventure. Some memories belong to one stretch of the 1970s, 1980s or 1990s, while others may return as soon as a name is mentioned. Which of these 10 shows do you remember most clearly, and what moment takes you straight back?
