BATON ROUGE — Rev. Jimmy Swaggart, a towering figure in American evangelicalism whose impassioned sermons, soulful piano playing, and global ministry changed the lives of millions, has died. He was 90.
“It is with heavy hearts and unwavering faith in the promises of Christ that Jimmy Swaggart Ministries announces the passing of Reverend Jimmy Lee Swaggart,” the ministry released in a statement.
On Father’s Day morning, Rev. Swaggart was found unresponsive and rushed to a Baton Rouge hospital as family, church members, and supporters around the world lifted up urgent prayers. The moment was so critical that his grandson, Pastor Gabriel Swaggart, paused the live morning church service to announce, “I’m sorry to interrupt the service, but we need a miracle right now.”
Hours later in an evening prayer service Pastor Donnie explained exactly what happened.
“A little after 8:00 a.m., Gabe and I rushed to mother’s house because Dad had gone into cardiac arrest. He never regained consciousness. We both took turns giving him chest compressions until EMT could get there,” he recalled.
Reverend Swaggart remained hospitalized for over a week. Each update given was much of the same.
“I wish I could give you an update but there has been no change,” Pastor Donnie Swaggart said in a Sunday morning service, one week later.
Despite medical efforts and the flood of intercession from across the globe, Rev. Swaggart passed away peacefully at a Baton Rouge Hospital at 7:30 a.m. on July 1, surrounded by loved ones with his final moments marked by the same faith that defined his life.
