The demo was released on Newgrounds in 2020. The game is developed by a small group consisting primarily of Cameron "ninjamuffin99" Taylor, David "PhantomArcade" Brown, Isaac "Kawai Sprite" Garcia, and evilsk8r. Friday Night Funkin' is also open-source. Friday Night Funkin' revolves around the player character, Boyfriend, who must defeat a variety of opponents in singing and rapping contests in order to continue dating his love interest, Girlfriend. Gameplay involves hitting notes with timed inputs while avoiding running out of health for the duration of the song. There are currently nine levels, alongside selected songs amongst the nine levels featuring more difficult remixes. Friday Night Funkin' was initially created for the Ludum Dare 47 game jam on October 5, 2020. An expanded demo was released on November 1, 2020, with updates continually released in the following months. A full version backed by Kickstarter, titled Friday Night Funkin': The Full Ass Game, is in development. Vs. Dave and Bambi is a Friday Night Funkin' mod created by MoldyGangstaHero/MoldyGH (Dillon's previous side project and username). The mod was formerly directed by him, but is now directed by Rapparep. It is developed by the Sad Guy Big Head team. It was first published on April 6th, 2021. v3.0 of the mod— released October 1st, 2022— featured 5 weeks, 33 songs, and 15 cutscenes. It also included a terminal feature that allowed players to unlock additional songs and information about the story. There were 19 characters, 11 of which players could rap battle and 6 that could be played as. 3.0 would be the final update before the complete story overhaul. The story seen through the terminal will continue in Dave And Bambi: Underside, a non-canon offshoot project by MissingTextureMeow101. Volume 1 of the mod— released on August 30th, 2025— features 3 weeks and 21 playable songs. There are an additional 11 songs for the menus. It includes an "OST" feature, which has an interactive interface that allows players to listen to the game's music.
