I sat down with Yen, the private chef in Da Nang who cooks my meal prep three times a day. She makes around 30 meals every morning for about 15 regular customers. She also caters private dinners and parties, and she built it all herself as a single mother.

You've asked me over and over what I do for food and fitness here. The answer is Yen. She's been a big part of my health journey, and today you finally get to meet her, both as a chef and as a businesswoman.
Yen is from Quang Ngai, about 120 kilometers south of Da Nang. She never went to cooking school. She learned from her mom, who she says is the best cook she's ever known.
Before COVID, Yen owned two restaurants in Son Tra, a Vietnamese noodle shop serving mi quang and fish cake noodles and a busy seafood restaurant. COVID shut both down. She was sleeping about four hours a night back then, and that's when she decided life shouldn't be 90% business.
About five years ago, an expat asked in a local Facebook group if anyone could do meal prep. Yen answered, and that's how this business started. Today she has:
Around 15 regular customers who order every day
About 30 meals a day on average, and up to 70 with her assistant
Private chef catering for dinners, birthdays and parties, with table settings and decorations included
Vietnamese, Thai, Italian and French food, depending on what you like
Here's what I appreciate most. Her meals are custom-made down to the grams of chicken and green beans, and they cost no more than eating a meal at a local restaurant. I've had food poisoning three or four times since moving here. In the year and a half I've been eating Yen's meals, I haven't had it once.
If you're around An Thuong, you can message her in the morning for lunch the same day, and she delivers it herself. You'll find her daily posts in the An Thuong Local and Expat in Da Nang Facebook groups.
If you're thinking about moving to Vietnam, retiring in Da Nang, or wondering how to eat healthy here without cooking, this one's for you.
