In this video, I record my real living expenses for one week — including rent, groceries, electricity, internet, and a meal outside. I spent a total of RMB 124 for the week, which comes to roughly RMB 496 per month if calculated over four weeks. Sounds incredibly cheap, right? But after actually living here, I realized that a low cost of living also comes with some trade-offs. Shopping requires planning, transportation is less convenient than in the city, and sometimes you have to chop wood, make a fire, or even grow some of your own food. At the same time, village life offers something that is becoming increasingly difficult to find in the city: quiet surroundings, nature, and a much slower pace of life. So, is a small mountain village in Chuxiong really a good place for long-term living, travel, or retirement?
