Why does time seem to move faster as we get older? Childhood summers once felt endless. Now entire years can seem to disappear almost before we notice them. The obvious explanation is that our perception of time simply speeds up with age. But the psychology and neuroscience of time perception suggest something more complicated — and perhaps more unsettling. In this episode of One Question, we explore the difference between experiencing time in the moment and reconstructing it through memory. We look at prospective and retrospective time, why novelty and contextual change can create stronger memory landmarks, why routine periods can become compressed when we look backward, and why the popular idea that each year feels shorter simply because it represents a smaller percentage of your life may be too simple. The clock may not actually be speeding up. What changes may be the way the brain remembers the journey. And that raises a much more personal question: if our lives are partly reconstructed from the moments our brains have reason to keep separate, what makes some years feel enormous in memory while others seem to vanish?
